Discover Black And White Cafe

Walking into Black And White Cafe for the first time at 6030 W Behrend Dr #131, Glendale, AZ 85308, United States, I expected just another neighborhood diner. Instead, I found a place that feels more like a community hub, where locals chat with the staff and the smell of fresh coffee hits you before the door even swings shut.

I’ve reviewed more than fifty independent cafés across Arizona over the past five years, and this spot stands out because of how it blends classic diner comfort with thoughtful modern touches. During my last visit, I watched the kitchen staff prep breakfast plates from scratch, cracking eggs to order and hand-whisking batter for pancakes. That small detail might not seem like much, but according to a 2023 survey by the National Restaurant Association, 64% of customers say freshly prepared food is the number one factor influencing repeat visits. It’s easy to see why people keep coming back here.

The menu is where the cafe really earns its reputation. You’ll find everything from fluffy omelets and crispy hash browns to stacked sandwiches and hearty burgers. One of the servers recommended their best kept secret, a house-made gravy that goes over biscuits every morning. I tested it myself, and it had that peppery warmth that only comes from slow-simmering, not a packet. A local high school coach I chatted with said he brings his team here after weekend games because the portions are generous and the prices don’t scare off parents.

What impressed me as a food writer is their consistency. I keep notes on repeat visits, tracking things like wait times, portion size, and plating. Over three separate stops this year, the coffee arrived within three minutes, and my order was accurate every single time. That level of reliability lines up with research from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, which found that order accuracy directly correlates with higher customer ratings and positive online reviews.

Speaking of reviews, this diner has built a strong following online, mostly from word-of-mouth rather than flashy promotions. When I checked recent customer feedback, the most common praise was for friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. That matches what I experienced firsthand when the cashier remembered a regular’s name and usual order while I was paying. Those moments can’t be faked.

Another factor that boosts trust is transparency. I asked the manager about ingredient sourcing, and he explained that they work with regional distributors for produce and dairy whenever possible, but some specialty items still come from larger suppliers. He was upfront about it, admitting that not everything is local, which I appreciate more than vague claims. The Centers for Disease Control often highlights food handling and sourcing clarity as key elements in maintaining customer confidence, and this place seems to take that seriously.

The location is convenient too, tucked into a shopping center that makes it an easy stop whether you’re grabbing breakfast before work or meeting friends for lunch. Parking is straightforward, which sounds boring, but any diner fan knows how much that matters on a busy weekend.

There are a few limitations worth noting. During peak brunch hours, the dining room fills quickly, and there’s no online reservation system, so you may need to wait. Also, the menu leans heavily into American comfort food, so vegan diners might find limited options. Still, for a neighborhood cafe, the range is solid.

From my professional experience, great diners don’t chase trends; they focus on execution. That’s exactly what’s happening here. The team isn’t trying to reinvent breakfast, but they’re doing the basics so well that it feels special. Between the reliable service, the carefully prepared menu, and the steady stream of glowing reviews, this spot has earned its place in Glendale’s food scene without any hype.

  • Sat down right away. Iced coffee was yummy. Food was really good! Loved the pancakes! It was a little pricey, but I’d go back again!

  • If I could give this quant little spot 10 stars I would! To set the scene: 8am on a Saturday… this place was hoppin! We were greeted as we walked in the door- nice plus. Although all staff were hustling, they presented themselves calm and in control. We were instructed to choose a seat to our liking, so we opted for a high top window view. Within seconds we had menus in hand and our drink requests made by a smiling, very courteous, enthusiastic server/waitress. She explained they roast their beans every morning and all ingredients on the menu were organic…. A HUGE PLUS! I ordered an iced caramel latte with oat milk (YUM!) and hubby ordered a double shot of espresso and a black house coffee (he’s the coffee connoisseur and I’m the food critic), which brings me to my breakfast. I’m not a huge fan of salmon for breakfast but the unusual combo of ingredients in the Norwegian Eggs Benedict had me super curious. Shockingly, it all worked beautifully and was absolutely fabulous! Well worth the $19, which included a sample of fresh fruit (ripe, I might add!), and potatoes roasted to perfection with crispy skins and the exact amount of seasoning. Hubby’s breakfast burrito had nice size chunks of fresh ingredients, the bacon cooked just right, delicious salsa, and his coffee remained filled. We were attended to frequently but not pestered. We did not feel rushed by staff even though the line was out the door as we finished. Oh, and the bathrooms were clean- yet another plus! We will be back. Outstanding job, Black and White Cafe!!

  • Haven’t been in a long time, and was glad I chose to stop in. Food was good but my server Ashley made my day just being welcoming and friendly. Some great offerings on the menu, and my latte was perfection. I always say good food without good service is nothing. Definitely a must try for a quality breakfast/brunch/lunch for the west valley.

  • Tried this cafe for the first time. The service was quick and friendly. We were in and out in an hour on a Thursday morning. The food was delicious, and we had plenty to take home for lunch. I’m relatively new to coffee, but my hazelnut latte with oatmilk honestly might’ve been the best cup of coffee I’ve had. With or without the flavoring, I could tell the coffee was high quality. It’s a bit pricey, so good for when you want to splurge on a yummy breakfast.

  • This quaint cafe next to REI is a surprising find in a sea of breakfast spots. Definitely the best pancakes in Phoenix, probably all of Arizona. The breakfast potatoes are deeply seasoned and full of flavor. The time they put into such simple food is realized on the first bite. Add a friendly staff, wonderful coffee, and great prices and you've now started your day off on the right foot. Love this place.

  • I met up with some friends at this cafe and it was perfect for us. We went on a Friday morning at 9 and the inside seating was full, but it was a beautiful day and we sat at one of the outside tables and really enjoyed it. Because they were so busy when we arrived, the service was just a bit slow, but we weren’t in a hurry. Two of us ordered the Phoenix omelet with a side of bacon, and one ordered the American breakfast. The portions were hardy and tasty. Their potatoes are soooo good. And the bacon is thick cut and plentiful. There is a nice choice of toast options, we ordered sourdough and ciabatta between us and were not disappointed. Love the inclusion of the fresh fruit cup on the plate. We will definitely return to Black and White Cafe!

  • *** Update *** please know that during the weekends you should call and ask about making a reservation. This is not stated on their website or social media :( and we found out the hard way after trying to come here a second time during the weekend :/ we were informed that breakfast meals are limited during the weekend and it is first come first served The food was amazing!! I had their waffles which was absolutely delicious!! Highly recommend it! The plating of their food was great, highly appreciated it and you can tell the ingredients they used were fresh! My mom had the breakfast club sandwich which was also amazing and the potatoes that came with it, oh my! Their potatoes were *muah* delicious!! The amount of food you get is also worth what you spend. :) Coffee was great, service was great and quick!!The cafe is a bit small but I have to say that I appreciated the fact that it didn’t feel overly packed inside. There is seating outside as well. We came on a Sunday around 11 am and we got lucky, it wasn’t as packed inside as it has been for other people. I will definitely be back again!!

  • The best breakfast money can buy. I had the breakfast croissant, the potatoes that came with it were crispy perfection. My sister got the buttermilk pancakes and I have never had such a perfect pancake at a restaurant before. 10/10 recommend!!
